Before healing the man, Jesus answers their question by asking which of them, if his sheep falls into a pit on the Sabbath, would not lift it out. If, then, it is lawful to relieve the misery of a sheep on the Sabbath, how much more is it lawful to relieve the misery of a fellow human being who is more valuable than a sheep?
Apparently, not long after the Sabbath episodes, Jesus healed a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute Matt. Not having a Sabbath violation charge to bring against Jesus, the Pharisees now resorted to the slanderous charge that Jesus cast out demons by Beelzebub, the prince of demons that is, Satan himself.
Since Jesus cast out demons by the power of the Holy Spirit v. Commentators differ on exactly what this sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is. The evidence from the text itself indicates that this blasphemy committed by the Pharisees can only come from a heart that is totally and implacably hardened against God. Obviously, a person with a sensitive heart could not commit that sin. We need to be careful that we do not add our own man-made rules to the Scriptures.
And He taught His followers to do the same. He confirmed the binding nature of the moral law. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. And He also recognized also the validity of the ritual law of Moses as applicable to Jews Matthew Get our latest answers straight to your inbox when you subscribe here. It was considered work to carry his mat, and therefore the Pharisees would have seen it as wrong. NicLaatz Laatz As is apparent already, the Jews had a set of extra-biblical laws and traditions which Jesus endeavored to destroy, as they had no biblical authority.
The carrying of a mat was considered a burden; however, the biblical injunction is to refrain from secular work, not to be idle. In fact, Isaiah 58 describes the Sabbath as a day not for rest in general, but of ceasing from our own work and doing God's work. Hebrews states concerning the Seventh Day,"There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His". The Sabbath is ceasing from our own works, as God ceased from His own works on the seventh day, wherefore, according to the 4th commandment, He sanctified and blessed that day. But it is more importantly, a day to take up the works of God, wherefore of the Sabbath day Christ declared, "My Father is at work until now, and I work".
Nathaniel Sklenicka I think the religious leaders in Jesus's culture missed the heart of God behind the commandments in the Torah and regarding carrying on the Sabbath.
Similarly, walking on the grass is allowed, even though this may result in some of it being crushed underfoot and thus technically constitute the prohibited activity mentioned above or the forbidden cutting of blades of grass. One has not violated the Sabbath as long as the original purpose was solely to move the chair or to walk on the grass.
In contrast, one is not permitted to engage in a task that always results in forbidden work. Thus washing oneself on a lawn is prohibited because it inevitably will result in watering the grass, which is forbidden on the Sabbath. In addition to the general forbidding of all manner of work on the Sabbath, there is a special prohibition against making a fire Exod.
The Rabbis considered this to include everything that pertains to the kindling of light, even if no actual work is involved. In modern times, there is a controversy regarding whether the switching on of electric lights and appliances is equivalent to making a fire. There are two reasons to think that switching on an electric light may not be considered kindling. First, switching on a light does not create electric power; the power exists already.
