Reply Barbara February 7, at pm We have a beloved family friend who passed and left us his home and furnishings. Drying time will vary based on the ambient temperature and humidity level. Sand the surface of the laminate bookshelves with grit sandpaper lightly, enough to roughen the surface but not enough to tear through or loosen the laminate.
Wipe down the bookshelves with a tack cloth to remove the dust created by the sandpaper. Check the ambient temperature to ensure it will not exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Confirm the humidity level will not rise above 70 percent. Applying a primer to the surface when temperatures and humidity levels exceed these limits can result in poor product adhesion to the surface.
Apply a shellac-based primer to the entire surface, instructs Rust-Oleum. Choose either a spray can or apply with a synthetic-blend paintbrush. Use short, even strokes with the brush or short, even passes over the surface with a spray. Ensure you apply the primer in one direction for even coverage.
